Student Loan Debt Has Become A Major Issue On The Campaign
With the 2016 presidential election looming in the near future, the subject of student loan debt has become a major issue on the campaign trail. The national amount of student loan debt is 1.08 trillion dollars, with 11.5% of that amount in default or in 90+ day delinquent. To put that in perspective, total consumer debt at the end of 2013 was 11.52 trillion .(Forbes, 2014) According to an in class poll, only 7 students out of 169 students were completely confident in their knowledge of student loans. However, if we had lower tuition and expenses students wouldnââ¬â¢t have to take a loan out in the first place. Many students are uneducated about student loans. When I say uneducated I mean that they have no idea what type of loan is best for them, how much they need to borrow, or where to get the loan. There are many resources out there about student loans, but there are not any requirements to review them before taking out a loan. Students are not required to have any knowledge ab out how the loans work. Students need to have the correct knowledge when applying for a loan, otherwise they may end up with too much debt or the wrong type of loan. A student should not start off their life outside of college in unnecessary debt. Going to a public four-year college should not cost you a fortune. If tuition and fees associated with going to college were lowered, then students would not have as much debt.
